Like everyone else in the world, people in China tend to view events occurring outside of their country through the lens of their own enculturation. So, when they watch a foreign presidential or parliamentary election in which unforeseen events, carefully planned talking points, and spontaneous candidate and voter outbursts all coalesce into what we’re accustomed to as normal election politics, it blows many people’s minds because there exists an expectation that “performances” like this must be practiced diligently and carried out so that the result is “perfect.” Newsflash, Hu Xijin: national elections aren’t the fucking CCTV Spring Gala.

So, when the usual suspects once again hop on board the “Democracy is failing” high speed rail to Wenzhou, it just seems silly. These “messes” aren’t examples of how democracy is failing, but rather signs of how it works. No one’s saying it’s the Steve Austin of political systems, but it works.
