I didn’t address the Clive Palmer side, so thanks for adding that. It seems to me that, from both sides of the deal, this is a vainglorious idea – much like the original Titanic, then.

This is strange commentary. In Australian media, the whole thing is being portrayed heavily as a Clive Palmer vanity project. Here…it’s much more on the China side.
But if you know Clive Palmer (he taught one of my classes back at university), he’s doing this to…flatter…”the Chinese.” He does a lot of China-related business, and this will no doubt put him on the famous Western billionaires list, alongside Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. He’s effectively pulling a Donald Trump and building himself as a brand. Not necessarily a bad move on his part, though it does push him quite a bit closer to the eccentric billionaire ledge.
