Surprised I never came across this before. While I understand everyone comes to their own conclusions, I have to respectfully disagree with you deciding I resorted to "self-righteous twaddle." Obviously it wasn't just this instance which made me say what I did; a lot of things added up to my losing my patience.

The response from the Global Times to the piece in FT was totally propaganda to save face (how could we expect anything less), and it is untrue that I was fired from a previous job. I quit CRI after they put all the foreign reporters in a room one day and told us "there is no such thing as objectivity," in order to support their forcing us to remove facts in stories they did not approve of. After speaking with people in town, I was under the impression that GT was a more open venture. I quickly found I was mistaken, and was prepared, with the comment I made, to lose my job, and move on to an organization that was not state-run.

You broke apart my piece with wild conjectures, but never tried to reach out to me for comment, and yes, you did improperly identify my nationality, as the commenter above pointed out.

The problem was the photo was from last year, involved police checking fake passports and had nothing to do with the crackdown. It was just the work of a lazy designer and page editor not wanting to admit they weren't paying close enough attention.

I was wondering about that as well. Black people aren't foreign here? I'm not sure I understand what exactly was racist about the original picture.

I had a run-in with a Global Times reporter a couple of weeks ago at a CouchSurfing social event. She was covering the 100-day illegal crackdown and wasn't aware that foreigners were supposed to register with the police within 24 hours of arriving somewhere (hotels not included). She had been living in Beijing for 3 years and had never registered. She also called her colleagues and they told her that I was just a blogger who had no clue about the law. So, I don't think I can take The Global Times very serious anymore. Good article! I like reading page!
