@jtdj. I think Meritt meant that if you hit a hurdle, it’s almost impossible to win the race. Hitting a hurdle throws off your timing. Everyone is so good that any fault in your run will put you behind.

I thought nobody helped him so Liu could pull himself together and complete the race on his own with dignity, even if it meant hopping around.

What I don’t understand is Meritt’s quote, “If you hit a hurdle, to recover is almost impossible.” Half the guys running in that heat hit hurdles. Isn’t knowing how to recover after hitting hurdles just part of the sport?

Echoing narsfweasels, I read a lot of Weibo comments speculating about him throwing the race because his old injury was acting up and he simply wasn’t ready.

Plus seriously, talk about pressure. When you have Chinese althletes like weightlifter Wu Jingbiao crying after winning a silver and saying “I let my country down”, would anything less than gold from Liu have been enough?
