This is hilarious. I work in quality control in China, and I have to be honest that I heard this rumor around the office as well. My Chinese and American colleagues alike got a big kick out of an Onion piece showing up as real news in America.

uhh, nice try, but confusing a slightly misleading quote is not the same as not getting a blatant joke (c’mon, Kim Jong Un sexiest man alive?). China is ridiculous enough that the “fake” quote could have been real.

Little mentioned is that the People’s Daily Online, which is actually a publicly-held for-profit offshoot of the People’s Daily newspaper, ran another humorous piece that has also been taken down, official pictures of the sex-tape official. A glance through some of their other slide shows indicate a taste for the whimsical. I wouldn’t discount that some people at PDO knew it was a joke, but as the problem escalated, the humor became harder to explain and it morphed into a pure misunderstanding.
