Given his generation, I can’t imagine him progressing up the ladder if he’d shown any ounce of personal charisma in public. The country would have been ungovernable if there’d been any hint of a possible personality cult, ergo show no personality.

I have to disagree with the majority’s take on this. Yes, this is a Hu Jintao who smiles. But listen to the content: take away the smile, and it’s not a whit different from what the Hu Jintao of today might say. Nothing but the cliches of Party-speak.
