Wonder how many of the participants were actually voluntary? Chinese are quite well known to force students to pump up numbers of various activities from marathons, attending non popular Olympic sports, to protesting against another country for whatever perceived injustice or indignity.

Interesting report, thanks. Sounds like the planning wasn’t very good. However, it’s worth pointing out that there probably is no connection to lack of water and cardiac arrest (especially for 5 and 10k runners). Indeed, in this sort of weather, drinking too much water and getting hyponatremia is probably the greater risk.

While the race organization should have been better, I think people should take responsibility for knowing the risks of events, and training properly.
