In Sanlitun a few weeks ago, I encountered the opposite problem at a local dive bar: A forlorn young Brit who had flown all the way to China to marry the “love of his life,” a Henan girl he had met at his university back home, only to be told by Mama and Baba to keep his barbarian paws off their precious.

At the time, he was considering local ESL jobs and running up a very large tab at the bar. Perhaps he will still be there tomorrow. Local ladies beware!
