The man escaped from a country where his daughter was prevented from going to school (ooh, kindergartens are such hotbeds of sedition!) his family was constantly monitored and he was kept in extra-legal detention for years.

I think, quite frankly, he can say anything he likes. He’s earned a bit of leeway, in my opinion.
