You only have to look at the language of his translated quotes to gauge the general perception. Basically, if people think you’re an emotionless, Communist robot, you’re only ever going to be translated in that unrelatable, overly formal, stoic tone. Ye Shiwen, who pretty much speaks like a normal teenager, suffered from this. Who translates “成绩非常满意!” as “The score is satisfactory,” after all?

It’s kind of like how any Biblical figure is portrayed as speaking in ye’s and thous. In this case, the closer you get to everyday English, the better it is for Xi.
