Good piece. I’m glad to hear that the frenetic energy remains.

I’m actually about to return to China this next summer. I lived there for thee years in the early to mid 2000s. I’ve returned twice for brief work trips, and the changes were quite incredible. I’m really excited to go back.

Guangxi cuisine will *never* be in unless mongrel mutt flesh roasted in gutter oil flecked with Hunan pepper flakes becomes the next big thing. Take it from someone who lived in that godforsaken backwater for a year—the bumfuck autonomous region has nothing to offer when it comes to culinary wisdom.

But seriously, nice dispatch. I’d like to see this (or something like it) morph into a regular feature on BJC: tales from the returned. Or localized tales from the returned—or even specialized columns that expand upon each bullet point and examine each one in-depth.

I believe the author is emphasizing the blind anger of Chinese people; many were to the point of destroying non-Japanese cars in their search for objects to vent their anger towards Japan.
