That was just one year after he had written his first post. To read there was great fun. Problems as I see them: his iconoclasm was refreshing in the beginning – over-egged irreverence in the face of x-thousand years of Chinese culture, and a sometimes great power of observation in daily life. “This is your life, Wang Xiansheng” was a crown jewel.

But this didn’t contrast that much with the blogosphere of 2009 and after, when it became chique to be “critical of China”, and also, you can easily get caught in a mentality of contempt. When it becomes a downward spiral, it’s time to pull the plug.

Not to mention the comments. Some racist, some simply deranged.

That’s probably MyLaowai’s core problem. His blog was meant to be about China, but its only enlightening aspect by now is what a WASP sense of superiority, challenged by a foreign environment over a number of years, can do to a foreigner.

It feels like like you read Will Self and took his verbiage combined with Goethe’s density whilst forgetting the whit and narrative that made them both wonderful. Shit man, you do this for free but your not 15 and don’t need to impresses the English teacher with the marginally sagging gut and the partially revealed C cup any more. Just write in normal English like the rest of us.
