Well, Henan is one of the places I won’t suggest to my worst enemy to visit.
There are nicer and better looking places like Yunnan, Guangxi and Xingjian.
There are nicer cities in China, like Hangzhou, Qingdao or Xiamen, just to name a few. Why in the world a person would lower his standards and live in a cesshole like Zhengzhou?
I think the answer lies in the shortsightness of a particular type of foreigner: the one who lives in his fairy tale and denial.

It was a cheerful corrupt shithole then, and seems to be less cheerful now. I spent some time studying wushu/kungfu there (in Dengfeng obviously) and the sheer bullshit around the temple depressed me. We used to play “Spot the fake monk” for our own amusement until we realized they were all fake. For some reason I hate Henan and Hunan the most of all the provinces I have ever visited, I’ve probably had more dodgy scams played on me in Dongbei, but I guess I felt more dirty and used in the double HH’s. But different strokes and all that…..
