Hearing about what happened in this corporate language training arrangement is especially interesting, because at face value it seems so benign. It would be even more interesting to hear about the lawyers and representatives that put together the Caterpillar deal, helping to tarnish a major US construction equipment player. Some people made a killing.

According to publicly available news reports, the – main – architects of the fraud are actually two American guys (see Reuters excerpt below)… and they were also involved in the Joy Global fraud (according a – pretty good – report by Anonymous Analytics).

REUTERS: Siwei is a subsidiary of ERA Mining Machinery, a Hong Kong-listed firm controlled by a shell company whose principals are two American entrepreneurs in China: Emory Williams is a former chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Beijing. The other principal is James Thompson III, the son of billionaire James E. Thompson, chairman of Crown Worldwide Group, a relocation company in Hong Kong.

As a westerner teaching English in Asia I sometimes feel myself a modern warrior in the language crusades, supporting the linguistic, economic and cultural neo-imperialism of the twenty-first century. So once in a while its nice to hear about an example such as your own where the crusader was captured, turned and much like a double agent, used against his own people.
