HEY CHRIS,

Remember when I needed to take refuge from the cigarettes/crazy people who thought they were pinballs (okay, okay, fine—refuge from my own leaden legs) and we sat on the ledge by Erhai with all the trash swirling around us before settling into the marshy area, and then there was that mother who dutifully brought her son out there to empty his bowels and then it got unbearably cold and you had forgotten to bring a sweater and only then did we decide to go back into the crowd?

Some unsolicited observations:

- The concert had the Dali Olympic Stadium as its backdrop - so basically the stage was set opposite the lake. Oh well, guess the performers got a beautiful view!! We got to become grilled cheese sandwiches.

- A group of enterprising individuals were selling cans of FOUR LOKO (yes, FOUR LOKO)... to those willing to shell out 200 RMB!

- FOR THE RECORD I DON'T NEED A FAKE GREEN CARD MARRIAGE. Please do not draw attention to my status as a shengnu.

- The thing that struck me most about the entire festival was that while the bands were all very different, everyone was so thrilled and into it!!

- The skateboarders looked the part, dressed the part, were coiffed the part, but did not skate the part.

- I didn't think He Yong's set was that bad. I thought his set was memorable!

- We had a Hei Bao sighting outside of North Gate of Dali Old Town. The band, including their new lead singer with his lustrous mane, were eating shao kao in the dark. (So maybe it wasn't them).

- The guitarist in The Way of the Dragon God (龙神道) was wearing this Das Racist t-shirt (http://dasracist.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/DasRacist-x-PMH-gents.jpg)!! Heems, are you reading this??

- I took all the pictures in this post except the first and last.

- For more, please see: http://imgur.com/a/NDQOE

- One final note: My one complaint about this piece is the misrepresentation of my vocabulary. I NEVER used the word "foreigner" to refer to our new lawyer friend, nor is that word even a part of my day-to-day vocabulary! (In fact I rather hate the word "foreigner." I prefer the less euphemistic "gweilo", because I am sort of from Hong Kong and that's how we roll.)
