There’s plenty of criticism to go around about a) China’s treatment of any dissident and b) the US media’s practice of lionizing a select few of them. Cheap character assassinations by association – Chen sounds like “these people” and “these people” include those who believe in aliens, the notion that NYU opening a new campus in Shanghai couldn’t possibly be related, even indirectly, and the truly bizarre notion that Chen “will never have to earn anything again for the rest of his life” are just cheap. I have no problem with an intelligent, well-researched article making these claims. but this is just abysmal crap

Kind of shocked Anthony doesn’t understand how China works by now. I actually believe the Post. China is notorious for trying to pressure universities to do what they want. ANd, yes the Chinese government may have let him leave under an international storm of shit, but that means nothing. With NYU trying to open on its turf, they would NO DOUBT have tried to get Chen booted at the same time. They’ve taken away accredited status all over the world for people doing minscule things they don’t like.
