The only substantive point in this article was made in the first two sentences. Chen and his group have not shown any basis for the public claims that they are making. Unless they have evidence, that is indefensible.

Criticisms of Chen from Jerome Cohen are both understandable and largely a distraction. Cohen could not plausibly know with certainty that there was no aspect of external pressure, or internal concern related to the NYU Shanghai project, involved. It is unlikely that he would have been present at the specific higher level administrative meetings at NYU where such decisions could be made. Jerry's critique of Chen is understandable, given that he does not believe the accusations to be the case, but tells us little otherwise.

It is plausible that NYU either received, or perceived, pressure on this issue. It is also plausible that they did not. It is in practice odd that, under the circumstances, Chen's initial I-year placement was not extended, but there could be many reasons for that.

What is clear is that without evidence, Chen should not be making these public accusations.

Let's not weep for NYU's "confusion and sadness." It's feelings may have been hurt, but it will be fine. Paraphrasing Frisch: NYU wanted a grateful and properly productive Chinese dissident; what they got was a flawed human being.

You have to wonder, though, exactly what NYU expects Chen to do after one year. He doesn't speak English, he has no marketable skills in the US, this is his first time abroad. How is he supposed to find a job and support himself in this situation? Even if he had taken advantage of English lessons or other educational opportunities, would it be enough to land him employment at a convenience store after only one year? Just sayin'.

Yeah, you would wonder why, the US being so shitty, now wouldn't you?

Not like the workers' paradise that is China today.

How many seconds would it take MrT to jump at the chance to get his own green card, if it were offered? I say 3 seconds.
