Dead on. kid’s obviously from HK or Taiwan where they still write the proper form of Chinese, versus the bastardized version invented by the commies.

I think the joke is the assignment was in English at an American school, and the student was of Chinese descent and decided to be a smartass and literally write the letter in Chinese.

Not sure I get the joke, though it is odd seeing a Chinese student writing in 繁体字。 I used to write far stupider crap when I was learning, I think because being a language student is actually a rather infantilizing process it rather encourages you to write childishly.
