I read River Town with a group of friends when I lived in China, we all wondered about this (off the top of my head the book basically never mentions any interest on his part in the opposite sex), but in the end, yes, if you can’t write about something interestingly then there’s no point writing about it.

I may be the only China-watcher alive who thinks that Peter Hessler’s wife is better than he is. However, I appreciate how Hessler has never bored readers about his sex life.

Olden’s video is funny, but even the finger-trapping the prostitute doesn’t compel me to read the book.
