From John Metcalfe of Atlantic Cities:

At roughly 3,850 feet long and 1,150 feet high, the bridge is the longest and tallest tunnel-to-tunnel bridge ever built. From every angle, it looks like it shouldn’t exist – or should, just as a broken heap of twisted metal at the bottom of the valley. It’s a natural magnet for anybody who likes doing improbable things off of intimidating structures.

The bridge’s inaugural BASE fest, featuring more than 40 leapers from various countries (and a wire-walker!), is scheduled for September. But one adventurer has already wedged his way into the history books, committing the first-ever dive off the Aizhai in a spectacular fashion.

The anonymous jumper is on Youku as well after the jump for those in China. The video really doesn’t do the height any justice. On the other hand, if you’re afraid of heights, you’ll feel just fine watching this short clip, assuming you don’t actually imagine standing there, on the edge, with a crowd of people on either side, before surrendering your existence to an empty expanse. “One, two, three, goodbye!”

Yesterday, on a hot and windy day at Shiniuzhai Scenic Resort in Pingjiang, Hunan province, Aisikaier, a sixth-generation Xinjiang tightrope walker of the “Dawa Zi” (Uyghur-style high wire) attempted to break a world record by walking 700 meters on a tightrope strung 250 meters above ground at its highest point. Because doing this like a normal acrobat would have been too easy — he’s a Dawa Zi, remember — Aisikaier chose to do it backwards, blindfolded, and without a harness.

After 52 minutes of walking, only 40 meters from the finish, he lost his footing, supposedly due to the wind and fatigue, and fell. The thousands of onlookers gasped. Five minutes later though, rescue workers found him walking off on his own power, unscathed. It was lucky he fell so close to the finish, and lucky that he landed on his balls — big enough to break his descent. Because… damn. Youku video for those in China after the jump.

Youku video for those in China after the jump.

Remember our post a few days back, “99 Ways to Heaven… on the Highway to Hell,” about a certain stretch of road in Zhangjiajie, Hunan that may be the most dangerous in the world? Well, Jokke Sommer, a BASE jumping and wingsuit expert, decided to take danger to another level: by flying over that stretch of road. It’s nuts.

The video’s a little dated by blogging standards — it was uploaded March 2 — but it’s still worth a watch (if for nothing else than Brand Blank‘s remix of Bob Marley’s “Sun is Shining”). We sort of made fun of Tianmenshan Heaven-Linking Avenue in our last post, but give Zhangjiajie its due: that’s one heck of a scenic area to glide over… if you’re the kind to not mind dying.

By now, multiple angles of American David Potter traversing the Enshi Grand Canyon in Hubei province are online, but no matter how you look at it — even knowing he successfully crossed the 40-meter canyon that’s 1,800 meters above sea level without falling to his death (because he was wearing no safety harness or parachute) — it’s still harrowing. A slackline, for those who aren’t familiar, is different from a tightrope in that there’s more stretching, like “a long and narrow trampoline,” says Wikipedia. Harrowing. Youku video for those in China after the jump.

The stunt has won him quite a few admirers in Hubei, as this local TV station show’s hosts point out (in Chinese).
