In Hunan, 99 Ways To Heaven… On The Highway To Hell

Hunan, already known for its spicy food and being the birthplace of Mao Zedong, will soon have another claim to fame: the most dangerous place for drivers. Check out the images of Tianmenshan Heaven-Linking Avenue, which has 99 turns to symbolize Heaven’s nine palaces. It’s a positively Arcadian paradise in which to veer off the road down a steep mountain slope to a fiery death.

In a country that consistently strives to be No. 1 in every category, let’s see how long it takes before this road is officially enshrined for its dangerous status (please note that these pictures come from a tourism website with a .gov.cn domain). Nothing says soft culture like a hard landing after a 500-meter plunge.

Come to think of it, maybe next year’s Shanghai Formula 1 race should be held here.

More pictures after the jump.
