On the same day that saw a team take perhaps the most unsportsmanlike option possible in the face of defeat — the women’s rugby sevens team deciding to stop playing because they disagreed with a referee’s decision, and losing 71-0 — sportsmanship went ahead and redeemed itself with this story.

A Sichuan windsurfer named Ma Jiao, pictured above, reportedly risked her own life to save a fellow competitor from the Liaoning team, Hao Xiumei, on Tuesday at the 12th Chinese National Games.

Yesterday, Liaoning’s team sent a letter of appreciation, in which they expressed “sincerest gratitude” and paid “highest respects” to Team Sichuan, while also thanking Ma Jiao “for risking life and limb in the dauntless spirit of self-sacrifice.”

Bus driver Mao Zhihao was leisurely driving down the road on Sunday, March 24 in Quzhou, Zhejiang province when HOLY CRAP WATCH OUT FOR THAT POLE!

Watch in the above as a streetlight crashes directly through the bus’s windshield. The 44-year-old driver ducked in the nick of time, escaping death. Impressively, he also stopped the bus, ensuring that no passengers got hurt. For his efforts, some have bestowed upon him the “Most Beautiful” label.

We’ve seen debris fly through bus windows before on China’s roads, sometimes with tragic consequences. It’s lucky that no one on Mao’s Bus 602 was seriously injured, despite the aftermath looking like this:

The cause of the streetlight collapse was reportedly an accident that happened on the other side of the street.

On the morning of Saturday, February 9, an American named James suddenly collapsed at the Liede station of Guangzhou Metro Line 5. The video of the incident was just made available, which you can watch above.

A subway attendant, Zhang Jie, supported James’s head while her colleague rubbed his chest. He remained unresponsive for a minute, at which point, while waiting for rescue personnel to arrive, Ms. Zhang began performing CPR. She said he remained unresponsive until after her third attempt, when he let out a breath of air.

A few minutes later, James was breathing on his own. He was sent to hospital, where he made a full recovery.

At the end of the newscast above, James says those who rescued him were like “angels,” and thanks them.

A young boy, identified as “10-some years old,” nearly drowned a few days ago in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, and probably would have if not for a bit of serendipity and a young nurse who just happened to be passing by. Fetched from the water by his family, the boy was showing little signs of life when Wang Guoshuang began performing CPR on him. Interviewed afterwards, Wang says she had practiced CPR as an intern, but never performed it in real life. Apparently she was a good student: after several minutes, the boy was revived. He is now out of danger.

The woman, who we’re told was “born in the 90s,” deserves all the praise she’s currently getting. Youku video for those in China after the jump.

Why is it always the good ones who suffer the misfortune? Last Monday evening at Changli Station in Hebei province, 20-year-old Li Boya, just a railway marshal trainee, saw a man jump onto the tracks in front of an oncoming train. Li went in after the man, but it was too late: both got hit, and severely injured.

Most news outlets only make cursory mentions of the suicide (the man survived, but is in critical condition, we think), but Li Boya, who had one leg severed by the train (graphic image in above video) and the other leg amputated at the hospital, has been the focus since this story broke on Saturday. People are calling him the “most beautiful/handsome 90s-generation rail cop,” a well-deserved appellation. He’s in stable condition at a hospital at Qinhuangdao, Hebei.

On Friday, the railway department in Beijing rewarded Li 200,000 yuan, and said there’ll be a job waiting for him after the graduates should he want it.

Here’s another story about a bus driver in China, but this one involves no death and no callous disregard for life.

Last Wednesday at 2:20 pm in Changchun, Jilin province, Fu Xiuli, the driver of Bus 363, was rolling toward the intersection of Comrade Street (Tongzhi Jie) and Liberation Avenue (Jiefang Dalu) when she suddenly experienced difficulty breathing, according to NetEase. In the above video, she’s seen in obvious pain, which even brings her to tears. But instead of panicking, she calmly rolls up to the next bus stop and has the 67 passengers get on the bus behind them. Some passengers linger to comfort the driver, and at least one dials 120 for an ambulance.

But wait… the feel-good story continues. That same day, the girl who called 120, Ms. Xu, went to the hospital with her boyfriend to visit Fu and give her fresh flowers and wish her well. Test results are expected soon.

“I want to quickly get over this illness, get healthy and return to work,” Fu said. “I’m very moved by people’s outpouring of support these last few days, I want to return to work and continue properly serving customers to return everyone’s favor.”

The media dubbed Fu the “most beautiful bus driver,” and the story has since spread to CCTV. The video here appeared on Youku about 18 hours ago.
