"His shooting is perfect," said a fan at the MasterCard Arena (Wukesong) in Beijing on Tuesday before the Golden State Warriors tipped off against the Los Angeles Lakers. He was talking, of course, about Steph Curry.

“His shooting is perfect,” said a fan at the MasterCard Arena (Wukesong) in Beijing on Tuesday before the Golden State Warriors tipped off against the Los Angeles Lakers. He was talking, of course, about Steph Curry.

Kobe Bryant is arguably the most popular basketball player in this country, playing for Chinese fans’ favorite team, but as a sign of the NBA’s global reach, there were plenty of Golden State supporters inside Wukesong. And why not? The Warriors were the darlings of last season’s playoffs, and Steph — health pending — is on the brink of superstardom. There’s not a better bandwagon to jump on.

Kobe, still recovering from an Achilles surgery, watched Tuesday’s game in a suit (he’ll do the same when these two teams play in Shanghai tomorrow). Curry, on the other hand, didn’t disappoint, dropping 24 points and adding seven assists — many of them nifty — and three steals.

The Warriors’ David Lee led all scorers with 31 points as Golden State won 100-95. Afterwards, players and coaches on both sides praised Beijing’s crowd (you can watch in the above video). No frisbees were thrown this time.

Kobe Bryant recently wrapped up his 8th China tour — another successful one, judging by the response — and as part of Nike’s Mamba Mentality campaign, this ad was recently released exclusively in China.

All in all, it’s pretty good — you’d expect nothing less from Nike. Or Kobe, for that matter, who’s depicted as a tough but patient and honest perfectionist trying to teach basketball to wide-eyed Chinese players. “Let me tell you guys — that was awful,” he says at one point. (Has he seen the Chinese basketball team these days?)

In the end, the kids begin to get it. Or they begin to get how hard it is. Who knows, some might decide to stick with the process.

They’ll all be the most popular players on the pick-up courts though, that’s for sure.

Kobe Bryant is currently in China with Nike, for the eighth time, to “inspire young athletes.” “As a key part of his tour, Bryant will surprise fans by dropping in at various basketball courts in each city to watch players who have heeded the call to come out and play basketball at night,” Nike reports, so if you want a chance to meet Kobe, get out there and play basketball on your city’s most popular court at night.

We’ve noted before, of course, that Kobe is very popular in China — he has a statue, after all, and here’s his professionally run Sina website. Maybe it’s because the media here has pushed the “next Jordan” angle for almost as long as Kobe’s been an NBA All-Star. Maybe it’s his willingness to come to China in the first place (surely Nike execs have whispered in his ear). Maybe his hyper competitiveness? He’s recovering from Achilles surgery, and judging by what he told reporters a few days ago, he’s out to break the record for fastest rehab. “Because of that the recovery has been different, the timetable has been different, the normal timetable for recovering from an Achilles, we’ve shattered that,” Kobe said in Shenzhen, as reported by Sporting News.

Speaking of Shenzhen, here’s the crowd that turned out for him:

Oh, and here he is tossing Ramen in Xi’an, via Weibo via China Navis:

Kobe is in Shanghai today, tomorrow, and Friday, then will stop by Nanjing on Saturday before arriving in Beijing on Sunday, August 11. Expect a big welcoming party.

Move over, Stephon Marbury and Shaquille O’Neal: another NBA player has a statue in China.

Of course it’s Kobe Bryant. Reports Dan Devine of Yahoo’s Ball Don’t Lie via Lakers fan Eddie Robles: “there appears to be a sculpture celebrating Bryant in the Chinese province of Guangzhou.”

It’s located at Nanshan Road in Panyu District of Guangzhou, Guangdong province, for those of you seeking to make a pilgrimage. It appears to be standing outside the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts’s Sculpture Museum.

When you’re a 15-time NBA All-Star, you probably deserve a statue — maybe outside your home arena first, or in your home city, or even country, instead of halfway around the world. But we suppose this latest development isn’t too surprising: Kobe has been compared to Michael Jordan by Chinese basketball fans since more than a decade ago, and is perhaps the most popular active basketball player here.

Here are two more looks at it, via Sina Weibo:

There’s a big Kobe Bryant sculpture in China, apparently (Ball Don’t Lie)

Though the 34-year-old Bryant has his detractors, his work ethic and ability to battle through injuries are legendary, moving opposing fans and Lakers supporters alike to “#PrayForKobe” on Twitter.

Similarly, Kobe (or 科比, as Chinese folks know him) was a hot topic over the weekend on Chinese social media. Bryant is one of the most well-known athletes in the country, with his numerous ambassadorial efforts to China earning him an adoring following and leading some (okay, his financial advisor) to call him a “one-man State Department.” (If anyone can bring an end to the cyberwar between China and the United States, it’s Kobe: just listen to the crowd go insane each time he “scores” in this ridiculous Chinese celebrity game from last summer.)

The anguished wails were especially loud on Sina Weibo. On Saturday, 科比 and #科比恐跟腱撕裂# reached as high as #6 on Weibo’s trending topics list, just ahead of Psy and behind the Hong Kong Film Awards. Weibo also pitched in to spread awareness by displaying a banner ad — “Kobe suffers injury; possibly an Achilles tear” — on each member’s homepage, as if this were some national disaster which merited breaking news updates:

Weibo also set up a special Kobe-injury-related portal for users to post their thoughts and to wish Kobe a speedy recovery. However, a large group of mourners and well-wishers gathered directly on Kobe’s Weibo page. Despite only having posted 14 times since opening the account in February and only in English, Kobe has amassed over 11.7 million followers who leave comments in English as well as Chinese. On Saturday afternoon L.A. time (middle of the night Sunday in China), Kobe distributed his first post-injury weibo, an image of him prepping for surgery that he’d tweeted on Twitter earlier in the day. Within 24 hours, more than 45,000 comments were made and the photo was forwarded more than 70,000 times (though these numbers shouldn’t be treated as gospel; there’s a ton of comment spam and no doubt thousands of bot accounts re-posted it as well).

To get a sense of what people said in the comments, I ran a script that downloaded and parsed all 45,000-plus comments. I ran it through some language detection libraries, which indicated that nearly half the comments were written in English — an extremely high number compared to typical Weibo posts, an indication that perhaps the commenters hoped Kobe himself would actually read their messages. The “pray for Kobe” vibe was also strong on Weibo, with more than 1,842 comments containing the word “pray” and another 932 containing the phrase “God bless.” Other common phrases were “Come back soon” and “best wishes,” but of particular interest were comments that identified Kobe as a “hero” and credited him with inspiring them or introducing them to basketball:

Thank you for teaching me to understand what the perseverance is . Thank you for giving a nice memory in my youth . Best wishes for you , my forever hero .

Thank you for bringing me into the basketball world, so many years, I grew up with. Kobe Bryant, you are a hero, Achilles tendon rupture for you, nothing, everything will be the last, you’ll come back!

Hey kobe, you are a realman in my mind,I see your games all the way.Because of you, I know NBA,because of you,I love this game betteryizhi. You make me know the importance of hardwork, you make me know such a strong will for winning.I will never be disappointed when I watch you game

Kobe, I began to watch your game since you first entered the league, I began to love your game since your second year as a Laker. I followed your amazing career. I really hope that the world has the chance to see you holding that trophy yet another time. Be well, please!

Although I was only 12 years old, but I see you play with dad when I was small, kobe Bryant, without you, my childhood is not perfect.

I don’t like U, but U deserve everyone’s respect. U r the best of best in this kingdom, the star of stars in this ground. Thanks for all your big times, all your passion and fights for this game. I love this game, we shout “Beat LA”,as we can’t live without it ! Wish U come back!

I don.t.watch basketball. i don.t know why so many people crazy about you.now i know why!you are their god and give them faith.you are the one who they want to be.you don,t forget smile and joke when suffer those.you never feel defeated.and i know you won,t.@KobeBryant

I know you’re a fighter, but take care of yourself at the same time. If ya injured we all will be sad . Remember there are billions of fans worried about ya including me. You’re a amazing, you’re the reason I started watching NBA, and you’re be the only reason why I stop.

A GREAT MAN,I learned much from you, about insist、never give up、assiduous and so on,so I never give up,I learning hard I don’t know how to express the respect to you!my English is poor, maybe there are some mistakes in this paragraph.waiting for you back next year!

Word cloud of common English words in Kobe’s Weibo comments (generated with wordle.net)

The Chinese-language messages which make up the other half are similarly sincere. Grief and encouragement abound, with 3,580 instances of “加油” (fight on), 2,011 of “早日康复” (get well soon), and 266 containing “伤心” (broken-hearted); and in the clearest expression of sadness, more than a 1,000 “蜡烛” (candles) emoji icons were lit. Again, the most fascinating comments are those which talk about Kobe as an inspiration and his effect on their upbringing:

You are the only superstar athlete that I like. I don’t like basketball much, but I like watching Lakers games. When I was still young, my Dad told me you scored 81 points in a single game; from then on I thought that you were so good/handsome. You’ll be ok. (你是我唯一喜欢的一个球星了吧。我没有多喜欢篮球，可是我喜欢看湖人的球赛。在我还小的时候，我爸跟我说你单场就得了81分，我就觉得你好帅。会好的)

My English isn’t good enough! I’m only able to use Chinese to express my heart’s feelings! Without your shadow on the basketball court I don’t know if I’ll be able to watch basketball games. Your injury really caused my heart to fill with worry. Yesterday, during your game, you tumbled again and again, you got up again and again, and when I saw your anxious expression I silently prayed and hoped that you’d would be fine, but … your performance really inspired people! Fight on! My idol! We love you!

Before long, a flying hero no longer able to fly, a Black Mamba unable to penetrate, when Kobe isn’t able to shoot as well, isn’t able to dominate and hit buzzer-beaters, when the former king of Los Angeles sits forlornly on the sidelines, we ought not forget, we ought to applaud him, give him our respect because he was with us throughout our youth. We can only shut up. Heroes are only temporary, but legends are for life! I love you master. Forever young!

Iverson and Kobe, you’ll both be forever young in my heart. Iverson already retired long ago, and after Kobe retires I won’t be able to watch American basketball anymore. For many years I never cared about sports in this way. . . . When I have kids, no matter if they’re boys or girls, I’ll tell them the story the same way. . . . .)

Reading through these incredibly earnest and heartfelt messages (you can go through all of them here in this spreadsheet I’ve uploaded), one is reminded of the huge impact Kobe has had on people who don’t speak his language and who have only ever connected with him through their computers or televisions. With these English comments — poor as some of them may be — and Chinese messages, they are expressing to their hero — and explaining to themselves — just how much Kobe means to them. Even for someone like me, who has never really been a Kobe fan, clicking through these messages warms my heart. Love him or hate him, Kobe is one of the few people able to move cynical Internet users around the world to tears and joy.

Good news sports fans: some of the planet’s top athletes are planning preseason tours to Beijing and Shanghai. Let’s start with basketball, the most popular sport this country by some metrics*.

For the first time ever, the Los Angeles Lakers are coming to China. They’re slated to play the Golden State Warriors on October 15 at the MasterCard Center in Beijing, then October 18 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. You hear that, Kobe Bryant fans?

And look: the Black Mamba’s Sina Weibo account, which now has 716,000 followers, now actually has messages! Who can possibly be surprised that the top post is currently to this video called “Give me the ball”?

(Just kidding, Kobe Bryant fans; it’s a good video.)

Next we move to FC Barcelona, the team currently preparing for AC Milan at home next week with a spot in the Champions League’s final eight up for grabs (Barca trails 2-0 in aggregate). On Monday, the club revealed that it will travel to Shanghai on August 4 to play against an unnamed opponent. FC Barcelona was last in China in the summer of 2010, in Beijing, where a disinterested and sleepy Messi caused some controversy when he put his head down at a pre-match press conference:

Yes, these are your sports heroes. We welcome them with open arms.

(H/T Mark Dreyer, Shanghaiist)

*More people in China rank basketball as their favorite sport, but if you had them rank a top three and assigned point values to each slot, soccer would probably still come out ahead.

We’re not sure when this happened, but the Black Mamba joined Sina Weibo. He hasn’t posted a thing, but more than 160,000 people are anxiously awiting that first message (that number of followers is rapidly increasing, by the way).

The last time Kobe Bryant was in China, he did ridiculous things like score 68 points in 15 minutes of a glorified pickup game. People here have also been comparing him to Michael Jordan for as long as I can remember, so yeah, he’s popular. We all eagerly await his first post, and hope his sojourn on China’s Twitter lasts longer than Brad Pitt’s.

Bryant attended a charity dinner hosted by the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, which raises educational funds for needy children in both China and the United States. And it’s also safe to presume he’ll participate in various events promoting his Nike sneakers.

Continuing the absurdity: we knew a video of Kobe on the basketball court would surface sooner than later, and we were not disappointed. After the jump, check out the highlights of Kobe scoring 68 points in 15 minutes over the weekend in Shanghai (brought to our attention by Deadspin). It wasn’t, ahem, exactly the standard basketball game though.

Quoting a CBS Sports blog post:

The game, played in two 15-minute halves, featured local pop music stars. Bryant, in China on a promotional tour, sat out the entire first half before scoring a self-reported 68 points to key his team to a comeback victory, after fans somehow texted in to give his opponents an extra 20-point lead. Yes, you read that paragraph correctly.

Did we mention pop stars? The game was sponsored by Sprite, so fellow Sprite sponsor Jay Chou was there (remember, he and Kobe have made commercials together). So of course Kobe had to get on an electric guitar:

Again via CBS Sports, here’s what Kobe wrote on his Facebook page about the game itself:

We played two 15 min halves with a running clock. I watched from the bench for the first half. We were trailing by 9 when I was notified that fans via text can choose a team to add 20 additional points to their tally!!! We were now down 29!! I wanted to play it cool but what the heck, the place was packed with fans who’d sang an early happy birthday to me and really wanted to watch me go to work. My teammates were down. They are all singers/actors and do not play ball much AT ALL, but they are very successful at what they do hence they are VERY competitive. They asked if I could bring them back in the second half..

I didn’t want to disappoint them or the fans that had paid their hard earned money for a show so I took the challenge of really using the second half as a training session for my stamina. I ran and ran and ran. I wound up scoring 68 in the 2nd and we won. Like I said, they are not basketball players by any stretch of the imagination. I was just having fun with all of them and loved hearing the crowd enjoy the show we put on.

Over at Deadspin, there’s a video of a dramatic free-throw-cum-half-court-shot contest, along with other weirdness. Considering how the crowd lapped it all up, we suspect Kobe’s new shoe should sell just fine.

“Highlights” of the 68-point game:

Interview with Nike rep in Wuhan — you’ll have to forgive the annoying one-man “Kobe” chant at the beginning:
