Ian Bennett, who runs the travel mini-video-series website Follow the Foot, caught some Chinese people engaged in very interesting park exercises not long ago, but instead of doing what most of us would -- watch from afar -- he hopped in. This enviable video is the result, with music by The Careless Lovers - "Blue Turning Grey Over You."
These musicians filmed at Beijing's Temple of Heaven are quite good, but are they the best? If you know of any amateur orchestras or park singers that can give these guys a run for their money, please let us know.
I don't have anything to say about this, really, except that I like it. Look at the concentration on the man's face. Look at his smile when the ball finally falls off his paddle, and his alacrity to try again, that very moment. This, young'uns, is how grown-ups entertain themselves when they don't have iPhone or iPad Apps. Isn't it better?
It's strange what goes viral and what doesn't. It seems this video was first posted on Youku seven days ago, then transferred to 56.com (unclear whether by the same person). On Youku, by far the bigger website, this video has 430 views. On 56.com: 334,000.
The original video description simply reads, "Old man, you're pretty awesome." I'll leave it at that.
I've encountered my fair share of amateur singers, mostly of the older set, at public parks in China, but none have given a performance quite like this guy, captured on video Saturday at the Summer Palace by YouTube user BeijingShenghuo. He gets an A for effort, definitely.
