“Get lost” (滚, gǔn) isn’t the worst thing one can write to another person. But what if 10,000 people do it? Would it result in hurt feelings? Fang Binxing can tell you. For Chinese New Year’s, Fang, known as the father of the Great Firewall, posted a nice little greeting (in third-person) on his Sina Weibo: “Fang Binxing... Read more »
We know what the US, Japan, South Korea, and China think about North Korea's third nuclear test yesterday (none of them are happy), but about North Korean citizens?
That's a stupid question, of course. We'll never know what the majority of them think, for obvious reasons. But via Dragon TV news, we know what a tiny number of them are willing to say on television:
One car skids to a halt on the side of a two-lane overpass. Another car skids. A third, fourth, and fifth car come shooting down the turnpike, unable to stop. Skip ahead to the one-minute mark to watch the fun really begin.
NKNews.org has rolling updates of today's nuclear test in North Korea. It reports in a separate post:
North Korea has successfully detonated a nuclear device in the Northeastern province of Hamgyong, causing an explosion with a magnitude of 5.1, geological surveys in China and the U.S. said.
The detonation originated at a depth of about 1 kilometer in Kilju County, North Hamgyong Province, 378km (235mi) NE of Pyongyang at 1157KST.

Ho, hum. Another Chinese New Year, another ridiculous, wonderful fireworks display over Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor.
This happened last night, two nights after Beijing's skies were lit afire. No place in the world quite does New Year's Eve like China.
Scant info available on this, but it speaks for itself. Three men pull a driver out of his car to beat him, but the man valiantly fights back. He puts one man on his back, then another, flips another dude, then goes on the offensive with flying kicks. Who is he, Ryback???
As advertised, South Korean rapper PSY made his first televised appearance in mainland China at the Shanghai Spring Festival TV Gala, which aired on Dragon TV on Sunday. There were indeed dancing robots, as you can see. But much more bizarre was the exchange at the beginning, in which PSY tried to teach Gangnam basics to the hosts, who appeared contractually obligated to play dumb as if there were still people in the world seeing this for the first time.
More than a few people have remarked on the war-zone-like transformation of Chinese cities during lunar New Year: the deafening pops, the concussions in the night sky, the screeching tail of rockets, urban scorched earth. Most of the time, however, nothing actually blows up. Most of the time. Around 11 pm Saturday, amid celebrations in Wenzhou, Zhejiang... Read more »
