I remember Jackie Chan’s Hollywood breakthrough film, Rumble in the Bronx (1995), as somewhat of a novelty. I was young then, and in no position to appreciate his previous work, so I bought the film industry’s characterization of him as a glorified stuntman. I chuckled at the anecdotes about production delays due to sprained ankles (he... Read more »
Artist Yang Hua Chun, who goes by Taiyangguodu on Deviant Art, has created the best (only?) GIFs of figures from dynastic/feudal China. There are two more images after the jump. “GIF,” by the way, was the “Word of the Year” according to the Oxford University Press, and much like the Nobel Peace Prize, I tend to think... Read more »
Navator and the creative agency NeochaEDGE recently released a video from this year’s MIDI Electronic Music Festival in Shanghai, specifically from October 27 at Pudong Lujiazui. These people are what one would call “cool.” UPDATE, 11:58 pm: Major props are also due for The Freshest Kids in China, which shot and edited the video. The... Read more »
This video by Gregory Lane, "So Long, My Hong Kong," presents dozens of beautifully rendered shots of the true Pearl of the Orient. I've said it before but it bears repeating: Hong Kong does not seem like a city built by men of this world, such is the ambition of its design and overwhelming beauty. You get a glimpse of that here.
Here's Chinese Mandopop star Han Geng, who won Best Worldwide Act award at the MTV Europe Music Awards on November 11. Via Shanghaiist:
Han, who originally came to fame as a member of K-Pop boy band Super Junior but left the group over contractual disputes, had a cameo role as Deng Xiaoping in the propaganda film The Founding of a Party. He was also an official torch bearer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
From Vimeo user zweizwei |motion timelapse|, here's one of the better China videos you'll see anywhere. Here's what Random Wire had to say about it: "Living inside one of China’s behemoth cities is a humbling experience, such is the enormity of their size and the human endeavours taking place there... [zweizwei's video] captures everyday life in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Shanghai extremely well – sunshine and smog included. Despite the endless sea of people streaming in from all over the country for the opportunities they provide, these cities can be strangely impersonal and isolating…"
Friday Outro time! We know it's technically Saturday as we speak, but we ask that you be okay with this. Brain Failure, a punk band that started in 1997, is in the middle of a national tour that began October 19 in Hangzhou and will end November 23 in Chengdu. Tomorrow, the guys are in Beijing's Tango Club for one night only. Check out its promo video via Beijing Daze if you'd like to see more. The song embedded here is one of their most famous ones off its 2007 Beijing to Boston album.
Posted Friday, this video starring toddler Romeo Elvis Bulte Boivin has already racked up 8 million views, and understandably so. Directed by French Canadian comic book creator Patrick Boivin -- who made Iron Baby two years ago starring his daughter, Marguerite Bulte Boivin -- Dragon Baby features a baby and kung fu, and if there was a set of magic formulas for a video going viral, I'm pretty sure baby+kung fu would qualify. Check it out.
