Beijing-based band Not There is throwing a concert tomorrow night at Yugongyishan called No Filler, featuring My September and Pacalolo and co-headlined by Residence A. The above video was directed by Gabriel Clermont, who you might remember from this video featuring DJs Wordy and SoulSpeak as part of our Chillax series.
Quoting what appears to be an official film synopsis:
Due West: Our Sex Journey describes the internal struggle of a young person seeking “love” and “lust” in contemporary society of Hong Kong. The film reflects the reason why men head North to Mainland to seek pleasure and the general problems exist among Hong Kong girls. It also focuses on the intricate conflict of the two-sided coin of love – affection and lust.
We've seen roadside buskers -- even drummers -- aplenty, but few are as impressive as this young man, identity unknown, who uses pots, pans and buckets to create music. This was posted on the Sina Weibo of @Ghost190 on Monday.
Here’s something new: the website This is Africa is presenting a monthly “short-doc series” called Africa in China. The first episode was posted on Thursday, featuring Sierra Leonean Mariatu Kargbo, a 2009 Miss World competitor who was supposedly the first foreigner to perform face-changing in China (bian lian), and Gabonese actor Luc Bendza, sometimes called the “African Bruce... This is very cool. Posted last month to YouTube and Youku and recently blogged by NeochaEDGE, "A Fox Tale" is a short animation made last year by four Chinese students in France's Supinfocom Arles (one of them being Chinese). It represents what people here mean when they say "soft power," though we'd be doing a disservice to the film to attach it to such an overtly political phrase. Just enjoy.
Our first edition of Saturday Morning Cartoon features a short animation from Episode 25 of Gao Xiaosong's show Xiao Shuo, which Jim Fields wrote about on Sunday. (You'll remember it was the episode in which Gao Xiaosong talked about black people -- specifically those in America -- and we were reminded that Michael Jordan is black.) Highlights of this animation include: how to prevent a mugger from firing his gun; how to defend against a knife attack; and, "Raise your right leg, aggressively kick the groin."
The big show of the weekend is The Creators Project, tomorrow and Sunday at Ullens Center for Contemporary Art at 798 Art Zone, headlined by former LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy as DJ. Other bands that will perform include Real Estate, The Chromatics, Duck Fight Goose (which we’ll feature in tomorrow’s Outro) from Shanghai, and Beijing-based experimental group CNdy.... Read more »
Below is a truly eye-opening video that neatly summarizes almost every conversation I've had with Beijingers about African-Americans (or people with dark skin in general). I enjoy the fact that simply by having an online show called Xiao Shuo (晓说) -- and spending a bit of time abroad -- this guy has become an authority on all things African American. Though I've seen the host's face on billboards all over Beijing, I hadn't actually watched the show until recently - a quick Baidu search revealed that the host is in fact the well known drunk driver Gao Xiaosong.
