Another day, another great rescue by a firefighter in China. On Monday in Tongren, Guizhou province, a woman who had slit her wrist crawled out of a 7th-floor window and threatened to jump. It took a fast-thinking firefighter with an even faster move to save her.
The manhunt in Anyang, Henan province is over. Police have reportedly detained the man wanted for indiscriminately killing three people -- all of them very young -- and injuring a dozen more on a bus yesterday. Reports are the man was recognized while trying to buy a watermelon.
Human beings. We are capable of appreciating art and music, and splitting food bills between multiple people, and maybe even someday flying to Mars.

On August 11, Ann Heywood, the mother of murdered British businessman Neil Heywood, issued a statement that appeared in the Wall Street Journal. ("The full text of a statement," according to WSJ.) "Given the circumstances of Neil's murder, I have been surprised and disappointed that, despite repeated discreet approaches to the Chinese authorities, there has been no substantive or practical response," she wrote. (It was then reported that the family was asking for $5 million in compensation.)
According to Wikipedia, a waterspout is "an intense columnar vortex (usually appearing as a funnel-shaped cloud) that occurs over a body of water, connected to a cumuliform cloud. In the common form, it is a non-supercell tornado over water." That's awesome.
In a two-paragraph statement to the New York Times, Bo Guagua -- the son of Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai, convicted last August of murdering British businessman Neil Heywood -- said he has been denied contact with his parents for the past year and a half, and hopes his father gets a chance to defend himself at his trial that is scheduled for Thursday.
On Monday at 3:05 pm, a bus in Anyang, Henan province was the scene of a knife attack that resulted in two deaths.
A man reportedly pulled out his knife and robbed several people in their seats. Fifteen people were injured and two fatally stabbed. More than 400 officers were scrambled to the scene.

Panagiotis Giannakis, former head coach of the Greek basketball team, arrived in May to begin a four-year contract to lead the Chinese basketball team through the 2014 FIBA World Championships in Spain and the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. As of this writing, however -- following a blowout loss to Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals of the FIBA Asia Championship two weeks ago -- it doesn't look like Giannakis will survive the month.
