For a good minute, this video is comic. The dramatic music. The onlookers (one of them scratches his head). But then, at the 1:07 mark, a voice-over (huh?) tells us the rescuer is in position. Rescuer? A rappelling firefighter swings swiftly from one face of the building to the other, and grabs the potential suicide jumper. He gets some help from the people from the windows, who grab the jumper's arms and legs. And just like that, another life saved. All in a day's work. Read more »
Image via here. In a story about ejaculation — featuring a heavy dose of it as the centerpiece, anyway — China Daily chose to go with the non-descriptive headline “Molesting suspect held by police,” not sure why. (I know why.) The story: The woman passenger, who was wearing denim shorts, said she suddenly felt something... Read more »Read more »
It’s easy for non-fathers to joke about what they’re going to do when they have kids, e.g., “When I’m a dad, I’m going to punt my kid around the house like he’s an Aussie football,” or, “I’m not going to spoil my kid, he’s going to sleep in a toolbox underneath the kitchen sink.” But... Danwei noted yesterday a story that made the front page of Today Morning News: on Monday evening, a man surnamed Liu heard the cries of a young boy outside. He then… …saw the boy dangling from a third-floor window of the... Read more »Read more »
Celestine Elebechi is the Nigerian who died in police custody on Monday, sparking a big protest the next day involving more than 100 Africans. BJC contributor Alicia found this video recently (more are beginning to appear on Youku). I'm particularly surprised by how brazen the protestors are, appearing to throw objects at the approaching police brigade. By all indications, the protest/mini-riot ended after only a few hours without many injuries, which is a blessing. Because judging by this snippet here, it could have been worse. Read more »
I’m ashamed to admit that I missed this Shanghai Daily article from Saturday announcing a partnership between the NBA and Shanghai Film Group to produce Amazing. It “tells the story of a fictional world known as ‘The Sixth Sense.’ It uses basketball imagery to combine the visual elements of a video game with a movie, akin to... Read more »Read more »
