The Beijinger's New Festival Showcase at 2 Kolegas on Saturday mostly proved to be your standard gathering of drunken expats, except it produced one hell of a musical highlight: Residence A, a Beijing staple we featured in an Outro earlier this month, giving what I thought was the performance of the night around 8:30 pm. Reasonable music fans will disagree, and I admit I didn't catch every act, but the energy was noticeably different with these guys on stage, to say nothing of musical phrasing and general ability.
On Sunday, a Jilin province-based ginseng association was holding a promotional activity in Beijing’s Chaoyang Park when environmentalists brought its event to a sudden halt. The Good Doctor, who wrote about rock climbing last month, apparently isn't the only one who believes rock climbers are "fucking cool." Last week, while climbing at Ritan Park, the crew of a Chinese game show showed up to film at the wall. Contestants climbed in pairs -- neon team vs. fuchsia team -- and we're told that for the most part they did not do very well.
The Good Doctor, Candice and friends were recently invited to cook for Cambodian acrobats at Beijing International Art University. A chance to give hard-working kids a taste of home? I don't have anything to say about this, really, except that I like it. Look at the concentration on the man's face. Look at his smile when the ball finally falls off his paddle, and his alacrity to try again, that very moment. This, young'uns, is how grown-ups entertain themselves when they don't have iPhone or iPad Apps. Isn't it better?

Spotted earlier tonight in Sanlitun, this white dog apparently sat on top of an air conditioner outside its fourth-story apartment for “hours,” according to witnesses in Hercules, the third-floor sandwich shop across the street.
