Just as we were talking about chengguan, the Twitter feed of That’s Mandarin tipped us to a video “going viral right now” of more than a dozen middle school students in Zaozhuang, Shandong province beating up a chengguan, who are unofficially this country’s “city management officers” and more unofficially this country’s street thugs disguised as people with... Three views to an accident. This past Friday, we told you about a police car utterly demolished under the wheels of a tourism bus in Beijing, and reported that there was one fatality. Apologies for being late with this update, but according to China Daily via Sina, published Saturday: The officer who was killed worked in... Read more »
It’s relatively safe to assume very few people in Guangdong care about the weather in Ukraine and Poland. Her owners initially thought they were puppies, but upon closer inspection, they discovered that the infants were actually... Read more »
Last Thursday, Italian designer Giorgio Armani held a show at 798 Art District in Beijing that was attended by 1,000 guests and stars such as Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige, Michelle Yeoh, and Fan Bingbing. Judging by those guests, the show must have been special — something about a decade-plus of Armani products in China.... Read more »
Lang Lang, who turns 30 next week, performed outside Buckingham Palace on Monday for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Concert, featuring Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and others. The main song in Lang Lang's medley was Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody in Blue #6, which seamlessly transitioned into George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Kid's got some skills.
