Vandal Damages Forbidden City Antique, Claims, “If I Didn’t Smash The Glass, The Glass Would’ve Smashed Me!”

An ancient clock was damaged when a vandal smashed a glass inside a Forbidden City pavilion on Saturday. The window was repaired and the pavilion was reopened the next day, and the damage seems minor.

The man, 22-year-old Wang something, reportedly yelled while being arrested, “If I didn’t smash the glass, the glass would’ve smashed me!”

Authorities are now considering upgrading the windows on all the Forbidden City’s exhibits to keep out the crazies. No word on whether they’ll be cleaned more often, as they should be. Global Times reports:

A man surnamed Wang, 22, from Huanggang, Hubei Province smashed a window of Yikungong, a pavilion of the ancient Forbidden City where imperial concubines lived, the Forbidden City said.

Police arrested Wang, who is being held in criminal detention and is being investigated for deliberately damaging cultural relics, according to the official Sina Weibo of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau Sunday.

Cameras will also be upgraded to high definition. The only footage police have is of Wang walking up to the exhibit, then backing away with blood on his shirt.

Wang’s motives are currently unknown.
