It was for a good cause. The Beijinger with this report:

Money raised from Saturday’s event (through the purchase of Santa suits and donations) totalled RMB 3,450, almost 50 percent more than what was raised last year. The money is being donated to Bethel China and the children of  San Dionsio, Iloilo, Philippines.
