The Situation Is Excellent: The Week That Was At Beijing Cream

April 15 – April 21

Boston Marathon bombings dominated news in the early part of the week; the first Chinese victim, identied as Lu Lingzi, wrote about her breakfast on Sina Weibo that fateful morning. John Sweeney’s unethical piece on North Korea aired on BBC, and it turned out to be simply terrible. Jason Q. Ng wrote about how Chinese netizens responded to Kobe Bryant’s injury. The Good Doctor covered the ongoing Beijing Improv Comedy Festival.

Lots of dead dogs and pigs turned up in a Henan village. David Barboza won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on Wen Jiabao. Xi Jinping did not take a taxi.

Censors censored Feng Xiaogang as he was giving a speech about cneorship. The Chinese government wants its papers to stop quoting foreign sources. A shocking hit-and-run in Liaoning featured a police vehicle (doing the hitting and running).

A big fire caused a man to leap from a fifth story building… it’s on video. Meanwhile, in Hubei province, another blaze caused people to jump. A three-year-old British boy was killed at a Shanghai restaurant by a “falling screen.”

The People’s Daily building is more than a little phallic. North Korean children swore their lives to protect Kimg-un. Here’s a two-headed pig.

Have you seen Psy’s new single yet? Do so here. Meanwhile, here’s an incredibly bizarre rendition of Gangnam Style.

Comment of the Week:

Ed, on shocking hit-and-run:

So typically Chinese in all aspects.
a) a pedestrian crossing the street without any regard for the other traffic
b) the police running people over and not stopping
c) the witnesses simply driving off to instead of helping because they do not want to get involved.

“Chinese Netizen” follow-up:

the perfect China trifecta
