The Situation Is Excellent: The Week That Was At Beijing Cream

November 19 – November 25

Five young children huddling for warmth inside a dumpster in Bijie, Guizhou province died of carbon monoxide poisoning: it was a story that shook the nation, resulted in eight officials being fired or suspended, and shocking resulted in a reporter being “disappeared.” While Chinese censors axed a photoshopped picture of the country’s top leaders doing Gangnam Style,  TAR Nation profiled Liu Yunshan, China’s soon-to-be censor-in-chief. Meanwhile, the auto show organizer who used bikinied five-year-olds did so to “boost their courage.”

Here’s an awesome nail house standing in the middle of a highway. Hideous people can have sex tapes too, as the story of recently-sacked Beibei District, Chongqing party boss Lei Zhengfu proves. For her 21st birthday, a girl’s sugar daddy bought her a dress made of real banknotes (value disputed). And a Chinese company reiterated its claim to build the world’s tallest skyscraper in just 90 days.

The CBA season kicked off with Beijing crushing Shanghai, with the Sharks’ Gilbert Arenas playing only six minutes before leaving the game with a strained groin. Hangzhou saw the opening of its first subway line, and people have already done nasty things to it. China Daily has given us the best idea for a scavenger hunt, while GQ selected Chen Guangcheng as its “Rebel of the Year.”

Villagers clashed with police over another environmental issue, a power plant in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province. In Fuan, Fujian, a traffic accident resulted in a protest involving thousands. Korean students looted a Beijing convenience store in broad daylight and weren’t charged. And here’s a petition to free Zhai Xiaobing, i.e. @stariver, who was arrested for a tweet referencing Final Destination in relation to the 18th National Congress.

This is the coolest 72-year-old grandfather in the world. These are amazing images of Hong Kong, by Gregory Lane. And Elton John dedicated his show in Beijing tonight to none other than Ai Weiwei.
